February Column

As February draws to a close with an additional day this year, I reflect on the extra effort and time each of put forth into those important matters. Our staff contribute and commit to their students each and every day so that our students can realize accomplishments that they may have only dreamt of or not even realizing the progress they make. Many times those efforts are made outside of the school day through the educators thoughts and pondering on how to best serve their students. Often times those efforts will take years to realize the full benefit of a single conversation or kind gesture. One effort within our community that we have available to recognize those efforts is through an amazing partnership with the Veteto Foundation. The Veteto Foundation has recognized excellence in education since 2007 for the teachers of Hobbs Municipal Schools. The 2024 Veteto Foundation nomination window will close on March 15th but there is still time to nominate a Hobbs educator at www.vetetofoundation.com. Those nominated develop a positive attitude in students toward school and learning. They earn the respect of students, peers, and parents, inspire and reach students of all backgrounds and abilities and are a resource for other teachers in their subject area. They demonstrate exceptional knowledge in their subject area, ready students to leave their class for the next grade level, college, or the workforce and are recognized as outstanding by other teachers and administrators. Get your nomination in for that educator in your child’s life that exemplifies excellence. The Veteto Foundation believes as I do that we have some of the absolute best educators around and they look to celebrate and recognize a handful of those each year. We are grateful to their efforts and continued emphasis on recognizing Excellence in Teaching. Thank you.

Other accomplishments to celebrate are a few of known at this time through our Winter Sports. Hobbs is home to a back-to-back Diving Champion, Gabriel Palomino. He successfully repeated this year as the Diving Champion for the state of New Mexico as well as setting the school record in Dive. Cameron Hernandez of our Wrestling team is a State Champion as well. Just this month he earned his 100th win as a wrestler and claimed the title at the state tournament. Science Olympiad was held this month as well and we celebrate each of our students who participated in Science Olympiad this year. Below are those individuals who placed in the top 3 positions at the state competition: 1st place – Hayden Campbell & Clayton Wilson; 2nd place – Gracie Crum & Lilyan Cupples; Shelby Snook & Angelica Evelo; Haylee Randall & Ryder Hobbs; 3rd place – Conlin McCool & Emme Simon; Clayton Wilson & Hayden Campbell; James Engan & James Evans; Leslie Olivas & James Engan; Dylan Bennett & Kade Bennett; Luis Caballero & Duke Mbroh; Aurelio & Angelica Evelo; Ryder Hobbs & Marcos Perez and Mr. Skye Wilson was named the Science Olympiad Middle School Coach of the Year. In addition, there were multiple other medal winners as Science Olympiad awards medals through 10th place.

Congratulations to each and every one of you. You most certainly put the extra time in to be successful as well as those who we have yet to celebrate. Great things happen each and every day within our community and most certainly Hobbs Municipal Schools.
