HMS Test Scores Improve in 2016

testNew Mexico Public Education Secretary Hanna Skandera singled out the Hobbs Municipal School district Wednesday as being one of the highest improving in the state.
Skandera made the remarks during a statewide web conference in which school grades were announced based on the results of  the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) testing earlier this  year.
The education secretary commended Hobbs schools for showing some of the most dramatic improvements among all schools statewide.  Four campuses – Coronado, Mills, Will Rogers and Highland – jumped three letter grades. That’s compared to only 18 of 849 campuses statewide that accomplished the same increase.
In addition, nearly three-quarters of the district’s schools received an A or B rating (double the state average) while 67 percent improved by one letter grade.
   No school’s letter grade dropped.
HMS Supt. TJ Parks said the results are particularly pleasing given the fact that this year’s test was more difficult than the past several years. He also pointed to a satisfaction survey which found that 99.3 percent of all parents or students believe their school is a good place to learn.
But HMS is not content with its gains. Testing data will be analyzed at each school in order to further improve instruction, Parks said. Intensified scrutiny and curriculum adjustments will be directed at those campuses with lower grades.
Complimented by Skandera for his leadership, the school superintendent deferred recognition.
“I don’t believe I taught any of the classes last year,” Parks said. “I’m proud for Hobbs schools and the hard work that the teachers and students are going to receive from this. It’s great to be an Eagle.”
The superintendent added that individual student PARCC scores were mailed this week. Once reports arrive and are distributed to schools, each student's results will be provided to parents, possibly during parent-teacher conferences next month. In the meantime, a breakdown of each school’s grade is now (or will soon be) available through a link on individual school web pages or by clicking here.
