Hobbs resident Barry Peters, center, was presented with the New Mexico School Board Association award in recognition of his efforts to improve student achievement. Peters, a former Hobbs School Board member, was instrumental in getting Teen Court started when he was a magistrate judge several years ago and also was a key member of a citizen's advisory board (FACT) which was instrumental in surveying schools, then promoting bond issues which resulted in the building of the Freshman High School, Murray Elementary and Broadmoor Elementary. Peters is pictured with school board members Gary Eidson, Joe Calderon, Lance Wiseman and Peggy Appleton at the May 17 school board meeting. In remarks after receiving the reward, Peters also cited the efforts of the J. F Maddox Foundation, Veteto Foundation and other community activists in supporting Hobbs students.
