hightower Pam Hightower, who spent 13 years in a classroom or as a reading specialist at Sanger Elementary, is returning to the school as principal.

Hightower replaces Alfredo Turrubiates, who was recently tapped to lead Murray Elementary School when it opens in August.

Hightower has spent the past several years working for Lovington Municipal Schools, most recently as assistant principal at Llano Elementary, a pre-K and kindergarten school.

“I’m excited about not having to make the drive anymore,” said Hightower, who lives in Hobbs. “I have worked with some wonderful people in Lovington but it feels good to come back home. I feel very comfortable at Sanger. There’s still some of the same faces at Sanger from when I left and I look forward to getting to know the new people.”

Hightower graduated from Melrose High School and began her teacher career in Hagerman after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Eastern New Mexico University.

After moving to Hobbs from Hagerman, her first job was as a classroom teacher at Edison before moving onto the reading specialist position at Sanger. Hightower said her background in reading will help her to continue to make the subject a priority at Sanger.

While Hightower will meet with her staff next week, she plans to be at Sanger Elementary School full-time after spring break in order to become familiar with her new job.

In the meantime, Hightower – who has been the Eagles’ official statistician for more than ten years – will continue to be a familiar face at the scorer’s table during Hobbs basketball games.  “I enjoy athletics and I like to stay involved,” she said.
