Hobbs students read their winning essays Monday night at a patriotic American Legion Auxiliary event.
First-place classroom winners were selected from the 159 essays written on the topic, “What Freedom Means to My Family.”
Overall winners were Sanger student Elaina Valdivia, who took first place in the third and fourth-grade division; Houston Middle School student Alexia Calderon who won the fifth and sixth-grade division and Houston Middle School student Emma Haston, who won in the 7th and 8th-grade division. Valdivia and Calderon each took home $25 while Haston earned $50 for her entry.
Classroom entries were as follows: Third-grade: Elly Granger, Stone; Fourth-grade: Kinsey Encinias, Stone; Abigail Mackey, Mills; Donovan Eagans and Lexie Hernandez, Edison; Elaina Valdivia and Hannah Souter, Sanger; Fifth-grade: Ahnika Rising, Broadmoor; Ethan Evans, Jefferson; Sixth-grade: Sebastian Bozeman, Houston; Kya Taylor, Houston; Connor Robertson, Houston; Yaizeth Gurrola Mares, Heizer; Alexia Calderon; Houston; Seventh-grade: Shayna Duff, Houston; Scott Fleming, Houston; Emma Haston, Houston; Eighth-grade: Colton Gainer, Houston.
