On August 8
th2012, the Hobbs Municipal Schools was contacted by Marcia Knight, with thePublic Education Department (PED) and informed that our current practice ofgranting Dual Credit to Advanced Placement courses could no longer continue.   

This meansthat students expecting to earn dual credit while taking an Advanced Placementcourse will not be allowed the privilege of earning Dual Credit and APsimultaneously in the following courses beginning school year 2012-2013.

  • AP MicroEconomics ,  AP Government andPolitics,  AP US History
  • AP EnglishLiterature and Composition, AP Language and Composition
  • APStatistics, AP Calculus AB
  • AP Biology,AP Chemistry

Students will need to select one of two options.

OPTION 1

     Take thecourse as an Advanced Placement class  

  • ·Students will need to earn a 3, 4 or 5 toearn the college credit for the course.
  • ·Students will not be allowed to switch to theDual Credit class after the September deadline.
  • ·The course will appear as an AdvancedPlacement course on the transcript.
  • ·Students will take the AP exam for finalgrade.
  • ·Students will receive earned bonus pointssolely for class ranking.

 

OR

 

OPTION 2

     Take thecourse as a Dual Credit class

  • ·The student will continue to earn this creditfrom the New Mexico Junior College.
  • ·Students will not be allowed to switch to theAdvanced Placement class after the September deadline.
  • ·The course will appear as a Dual Creditcourse on the transcript.
  • ·Students will take the AP exam for finalgrade.
  • ·Students will receive earned bonus pointssolely for class ranking.

 

HMS studentsin theabove listed courses will still be able to earn bonus points in boththe AP and dual credit classes.   Thepoints will be applied for these classes only if the final semester average is70 or above at the end of each semester. Bonus points are used solely for class ranking and do not affect thecumulative GPA.  

All studentswill be required to take the AP exam in the spring as the final exam in thecourse as it has been in previous years. The only change is what will appear on the transcript, AP Course, orDual Credit.
