Investing in Education: Why a $50 Million Bond Election is Vital

Hobbs continues to be a thriving community. Hobbs Schools strives to serve as a cornerstone of progress and success. It is through our schools that we prepare the next generation for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. In our ever-evolving world, ensuring access to quality education is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity. This is precisely why our community identified the need to construct a fourth middle school and replace Heizer Middle School.

Over the years, our community has grown, and with it, so has the demand for educational resources. Existing middle schools are becoming overcrowded, making it increasingly challenging for our students to receive the more individualized attention they deserve. This overcrowding not only hinders academic progress but also impacts students' overall well-being. A new middle school is a vital step towards alleviating this burden, providing our children with the space and resources they need to thrive.

Furthermore, Heizer Middle School is in dire need of replacement. It has faithfully served our community for decades, but its facilities are outdated and struggling to meet modern educational needs. Investing in a new, state-of-the-art school building will not only improve the learning environment. Our children deserve nothing less than the best, and a new middle school will ensure they receive it.

Now, you might ask, "Why a bond election, and why $50 million?" The answer is simple: the scale of this endeavor demands significant financial backing. A bond election allows our community to leverage a partnership with the State of NM in their funding 44% of each of the two projects.  The $50 million budget is a thoughtful and calculated election that considers our current and potential tax burden taken on by our community. This passage will not increase our taxes and allow the money to flow back to our community through the partnership with NM.

Critics may argue that such an investment is too steep, but we must remember that this is an investment in our community's future prosperity. Quality education enhances property values, attracts businesses, and promotes civic engagement. A well-educated populace is more likely to contribute positively to the local economy and society as a whole. This bond election is an opportunity for us to build a stronger, more prosperous community for generations to come.

In conclusion, the need for a $50 million bond election to build a fourth middle school and replace Heizer is not just a matter of bricks and mortar. It's an investment in the future of our community, our children, and our shared success. A passage of the upcoming bond election will not increase our taxes and leverage the state partnership.

Beginning on October 10, early and absentee voting will begin at a few locations across our county. As we approach Election Day, November 7, there will be additional polling locations as well as the locations on November 7, 2023. Hobbs Municipal Schools asks that each of us vote in the upcoming election.
